Dreaming of a high-elevation Colorado mountain proposal with sweeping alpine views? Zach chose Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park for a summer surprise proposal above 12,000 feet — complete with dramatic skies, a hidden outfit change, and a custom engraved gift. If you’re considering a Trail Ridge Road proposal or searching for the best places to propose in Colorado, this real-life story will show you exactly what to expect.

Zach and Sabrina traveled from Kentucky for a trip they had been dreaming about for years. They had never been out west before, but Zach had always loved the Rocky Mountains and knew Colorado would be the perfect place to propose.
Sabrina thought they were in Colorado for work — Zach owns a mechanic shop that sometimes hauls campers and freight out west — and that they were simply adding on a couple days to explore. After eight years together, lots of hiking adventures, and countless memories, Zach was finally ready to ask her to marry him.
Zach’s vision for the proposal?
High elevation. Mountain views. On top of the world.
He was open to proposing along a hiking trail since they love being outdoors, but he also thought Sabrina might enjoy getting dressed up afterward. So he secretly packed a change of clothes for her in the car — just in case.
The Perfect Trail Ridge Road Proposal Spot
We chose a short trail along Trail Ridge Road inside Rocky Mountain National Park. This iconic road climbs above treeline and crosses the Continental Divide, offering sweeping alpine views in every direction. It’s one of my favorite places for a Rocky Mountain National Park proposal because you get incredible scenery without a strenuous hike.
Summer storms rolled through that afternoon, but we waited patiently. Once the clouds cleared and the light softened, it was time. When they arrived, I pretended to be a tourist taking landscape photos. Zach and I had already selected the exact location where he would drop to one knee. He guided Sabrina to the spot, held her hand against a backdrop of endless peaks, and knelt down and popped the question.
After the proposal, we surprised Sabrina with the change of clothes waiting in the car. She loved the thoughtful detail. We explored along the trail, climbed onto rocky outcroppings, and captured portraits that truly felt like they were standing on top of the world.
The Surprise Within the Surprise
But Zach wasn’t done yet.
He wanted Sabrina to have something tangible to remember the day — something meaningful and custom. We worked with a local engraver to create a wooden charcuterie board featuring their proposal date and a custom outline of the mountain range behind them at the moment he proposed.
When he showed it to her, she was completely surprised all over again. And as I said goodbye I sent with them a bottle of champagne so they could celebrate with a toast later that night.
Thank you Zach and Sabrina
