Rocky Mountain National Park Elopement at Sprague Lake

Wendy and Mike did a Rocky Mountain National Park elopement in the winter at Sprague Lake with their kids and one of their closest friends. They traveled out to Colorado from Texas. Their thought was to do something simple in a scenic area with a lake and mountain views that they wouldn’t have to hike too far to get to. Sprague Lake was a perfect fit. It had the mountain views and water that they were looking for, even if it was frozen. And the dock at Sprague Lake where ceremonies are allowed to be held was a short walk from the parking area.

March in Rocky Mountain National Park

They picked a day in March which was pretty snowy. Typically March can be one of the snowiest months of the year in Colorado, especially up at higher elevations. Wendy, Mike and the rest of their wedding party came prepared with jackets and snow boots. We lucked out with a beautiful warm winter day. Snow covered the lake and trail but was packed down enough that it was easy to walk through. And snow also covered the large rugged mountain peaks which acted as the backdrop for their ceremony.

Unique Details for this Rocky Mountain National Park Elopement

Wendy and Mike incorporated some really fun details into their Rocky Mountain National Park elopement which included cupcakes and a ceremonial whiskey barrel. During the ceremony they added whiskey into a small barrel along with other ingredients like bitters. Everyone in the wedding party added a dash of something. Then they sealed it up to be enjoyed at a later date. They also had cupcakes created with a letter on each cupcake spelling out “we eloped”. It was super cute!

If you’re planning an elopement during the winter in Rocky Mountain National Park it can get really cold. So be prepared for that. Wendy and Mike came prepared and ended up with a lovely warmish sunny winter day. This can happen too. They weather here is really unpredictable. If you’re coming from a warmer part of the country make sure to get some wool socks. I grew up in California and one of the first winters here I tried hiking around in my cotton socks and it was miserable. Wool socks will keep your toes warm which will make you more comfortable.

Another great tip to staying warm with your wedding dress is to wear an underlayer of leggings or thermals. This will give you another layer of comfort and won’t be noticeable under your wedding dress. Having some extra things like this will really help if you’re doing an elopement in the winter in Rocky Mountain National Park.
