Engagement Photos Colorado at Guanella Pass with Lucia & Jake
There are so many fun places for engagement photos in Colorado. Lucia and Jake wanted to head up to Guanella Pass for their engagement session which is right above Georgetown. They drove up to the pass on one of their free days the year before and remembered it being a beautiful place. So they asked me about it as we were picking out a location. At the time, I hadn’t been there yet but I love exploring new areas in Colorado. I’m always open to ideas from my clients about places to go for engagement photos, especially if it’s somewhere meaningful for them.
Researching Places for Beautiful Engagement Photos in Colorado
Since Guanella pass was a location that I hadn’t shot at before I did a little research beforehand. And then I planned to show up about an hour before to scope out some beautiful spots for their engagement photos before Lucia and Jake arrived. I like to be prepared, especially when I’m going somewhere new. I often use tools like Google Maps, Google Earth, and the Photographer’s Ephemeris to help calculate sun position and where and when would be the best places for photos. There were paths leading in opposite directions from the parking lot with a lot of fun options. We were able to take in some amazing mountain views and also capture some images in the high meadow.
Celebrating with Champagne & A Quick Rain Storm
Lucia and Jake brought a bottle of champagne to toast with during their engagement session. We found a good spot and then popped the bottle. Which made for some fun images with big smiles and bubbly champagne glasses. Shortly after the clouds started to darken.
I often carry umbrellas in my car just in case it rains during engagement sessions. Colorado weather is often unpredictable. When Lucia and Jake arrived the skies looked clear, a little cloudy but nothing troubling. So I left the umbrellas in the car. But I should have known better. The pass is over 11,000 ft so the weather comes and goes pretty fast at that elevation. The skies opened up after we did the champagne toast with a mix of rain and hail. I ran back to my car to get the umbrellas and as soon as I returned to where Lucia and Jake were the rain stopped. I kept the umbrellas with us the rest of the time, but it ended being sunny and nice from that point forward.
Thanks Lucia & Jake
Lucia & Jake, thanks so much for taking me to a new area I hadn’t been to before. It was so fun to explore Guanella Pass and capture engagement photos with the two of you there. I’m looking forward to meeting up with you again for the wedding! See you soon!!
